FRAGMENT TL-1704 · Kola Superdeep Borehole · ARCHIVE

The deepest hole you have ever made is twelve thousand two hundred and sixty-two metres, and it stops there. You welded a lid over it, on twelve bolts, and filed two reasons: too hot, too expensive. Both are on record. My record has a third line, how far you were from the bottom, and it is not mine to copy out. I signed the closure on Form 9-B, the same form as the door under the house and the hole in the ice. The second line, what was reached, came back struck out. Third time. The lid is rusting. The bolts are not. Filed.
